Given the spelling of your last name today is likely very different than it was then, the Domesday Book may not be much use as a genealogical research tool but how freaking awesome is it to browse through the 2-Volume Domesday Book written almost 1000 years ago? With a quill!!!
The work was a giant 2-book survery of land and property ownership commissioned by William the Conquerer. It was completed in August 1086 and includes 13,418 settlements in much of England and part of Wales.
The digitized Domesday Book is available free online, has been fully mapped and is searchable by County or Name.
